Christmas Point -Similans

Khao Lak, Thailand

This is one of the most colourful, scenic and often exciting dive sites in the Similan Islands. The dive begins at Christmas Point by heading down a mooring to a sand-rubble bottom at a depth of about 20 metres, then heading deeper to the southwest where divers will find several giant arches and some of the best swim through in the Similans. The rock walls are highlighted by radiant soft corals and the sea fans can be very large here. Here divers will have the opportunity to see ribbon eels and fire gobies, and check the sand plains beyond the arches for white tip or leopard sharks.

  • Dive Type: Drift Dive
  • Diver Level: Novice Diver - 20 + Dives
  • Max Depth: 40m

Breakfast Bend

Khao Lak, Thailand

Breakfast Bend has its name from the beautiful early morning light here. The reef slope drops to 18 metres then steep banks descend further to 34 metres where divers can see black-spot garden eels. In the shallows, leopard sharks are seen resting in the sand and often octopus may be found lurking in the vicinity.

  • Dive Type: Boat Dive
  • Diver Level: Advanced Open Water Diver
  • Max Depth: 34m

Fantasy Reef - Similans

Khao Lak, Thailand

The Fantasy Reef is a great spot to enjoy the grandeur of underwater boulder formations that cover a huge area. This dive site is located on the west coast, the friendliest fish in the Similan Islands hang out here, including clown triggerfish, normally a difficult fish to approach, and cow tail rays in the sand.

  • Dive Type: Boat Dive
  • Diver Level: Advanced Open Water Diver
  • Max Depth: 30m

Beacon Reef- Similans

Khao Lak, Thailand

Beacon Reef is located just to the south of Beacon Beach and features a steep drop-off with a striking diversity of hard corals from 35metres almost to the surface. This site has the greatest variety of healthy hard corals in the Similan Islands, exceeding 300 species. There are countless nudibranchs, scorpion fish and devil firefish, one of the most beautiful fish in the sea.

  • Dive Type: Boat Dive
  • Diver Level: Advanced Open Water Diver
  • Max Depth: 35m

Elephant Rock - Similans

Khao Lak, Thailand

The site is named after an unusually shaped rock that juts out of the water just southwest of Koh Similan. The huge boulders that form Elephant Head Rock create daring swim-through, arches, caverns, gullies and tunnels. Here divers will have the opportunity to see fronds, colonies of spiders crabs, large black egg cowries, cuttlefish and mantis shrimps as you sink further down to entrance floor.

  • Dive Type: Boat Dive
  • Diver Level: Novice Diver - 20 + Dives
  • Max Depth: 45m

Deep Six - Similans

Khao Lak, Thailand

This is another deep dive following a ridge on the north side of the island that features finger table corals, feather stars and large knotted fans in its deeper sections.

Green turtles, white tip reef sharks and leopard sharks can be found on the sand. The marine life that divers will encounter here are tuna, rainbow runners, yellowtail barracuda, blue fin trevally and yellow spot and Java rabbit fish, with lots of blue-spotted sting rays.

  • Dive Type: Boat Dive
  • Diver Level: Experienced Diver - 50 + Dives
  • Max Depth: 50m

Anita's Reef

Khao Lak, Thailand

The Thai name for this spectacular rock is “Hin Muan Deaw” and is the best way to describe how beautiful this rock really is, as it directly translates to “Whole roll (of film) rock”, as one can use an entire roll film solely on this rock. Shallow coral gardens comprise huge pore and staghorn corals with small pinnacles. A big outcrop located on the southeast makes this dive site unique and attracts many photographers. Colorful soft corals, gigantic sea fans, and many species of hard corals surround this fantastic rock.

  • Dive Type: Boat Dive
  • Diver Level: Open Water Diver
  • Max Depth: 18

West of Eden

Khao Lak, Thailand

West of Eden basically comprises giant granite boulders that create nice canyons, with walls covered with colorful soft corals and giant sea fans. Some areas are characterized by rubble and sand slopes. The shallows are home to many reef fishes, and have stacked granite boulders covered with hard corals, soft corals, gorgonians and feather stars. This area is a nice place to look for macro subjects like nudibranchs and frogfish. Keep an eye out for cleaner pipefish and many banded pipefish in small crevices, as well as long-nose hawkfish perched in black coral bushes. The rubble and sand slope are good place to search for ribbon eels, dragonets and red fire gobies. Back at the reef, moray eels are quite common, as well as turtles and schools of angelfish. Occasionally, whitetip reef sharks cruise by.

  • Dive Type: Boat Dive
  • Diver Level: Open Water Diver
  • Max Depth: 18

Shark Cave

Phuket, Thailand

Shark Cave A.K.A Three Islets Burma is also known to be one of Myanmars best diving sites and is on all diving Itineraries of our MV Giamani.

Shark Cave lays approximately 30 kilometres North West of Stewart Island/Bo Wei, and is a small Island strutting out of the sea and with it comes 2 large rock pinnacles, all of these formations rise well above the sea level.

The island itself is in the middle of the two pinnacles, each of these are consider to be separate dive sites, so it is easy to spend the entire day diving here without seeing the same thing twice

The small island is in the middle with the rocks either side (running North West to south east and vice versa). Each can be considered a separate dive site and you can easily spend a full day diving here.

The pinnacle to the North West of the main site is at least 100 metres away and due to the potential strong currents (normally running North to South) it’s easier to do this as 1 separate dive.

The south eastern laying rock is nearest to the main Island and has a large submerged reef covered in hard corals and there are many granite boulders that are strewn around. Here the maximum depth is around 30 metres.

Some begin the dive at the main side of the island, starting on the southern end which is somewhere in the middle of the island. You can drop down here to about 25/30 metres down the side of the wall.

Check out the large granite boulders here all bundled together; here you can catch sleeping Nurse Sharks and maybe even some Stingrays relaxing on the sand.

Also, out on the sand you can find many different species of anemones with their guests (Nemo) Anemone fish and Eggshell Shrimp. Keep your eyes peeled for the large schools of Barracuda, Trevallies, Snappers and Fusiliers.

There is a natural split in the island rocks down at 18-20 metres, if you then follow it north into the small canyon and after approximately 25 metres there is a cave. The entrance is fairly small but once you are inside this is a large area.

Beware that there can be some strong currents ripping through the granite rocks here so be careful not to get cut on the rocks.

Inside the cave you can find Lobster, Crabs hiding in the rocks, Puffer Fish and others that like to lurk inside caves, including Nurse Sharks.

It is not fully dark as the natural light filters through from both ends of the cave, however we recommend taking a torch with you -as on any dive they always come in handy.

Even small caves like this are not for everyone, so if peering into black holes is not your thing, then just carry on swimming down the small canyon passing the cave. Keep your eyes open here for Black Tips Reef Sharks and if you are lucky Grey Reefs have been spitted here.

Other critters spotted here are ideal for macro hunters and included the usual and not-so-usual-suspects: Harlequin and Boxer Shrimps, Tiger Tail Sea Horses, Ornate Ghost Pipe fish and several different kinds of Frogfish and a smorgasbord of Nudibranch as well.
