The Love Mantas Week is a specialised journey through the iconic atolls of the Maldives, designed for unforgettable manta ray encounters. Timed with seasonal plankton blooms, this itinerary maximises opportunities to observe these graceful giants at cleaning stations and feeding sites, alongside reef sharks, turtles and vibrant reef life. With a mix of exhilarating drift dives and relaxed coral explorations, it’s the ultimate experience for divers seeking close-up encounters with mantas in some of the Maldives’ most spectacular waters.

The itinerary explores key dive regions including North Malé Atoll and Baa Atoll, each offering distinct underwater landscapes. North Malé introduces divers to the Maldives with coral gardens, reef slopes, and gentle drift dives where turtles, reef sharks, and schools of tropical fish are commonly encountered.

As the voyage continues north, Baa Atoll reveals richer biodiversity and more dynamic reef systems shaped by currents and nutrient flow. Here, divers experience a mix of channels, pinnacles, and coral-covered walls teeming with life, including eagle rays, barracuda, and reef sharks.

Hanifaru Bay: the heart of the journey
A highlight of the Love Manta Week is the visit to Hanifaru Bay, a protected UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and one of the most important manta ray aggregation sites in the world.

Instead of diving, guests snorkel in carefully regulated conditions, observing manta rays as they gather in significant numbers to feed on plankton-rich currents. This rare natural phenomenon offers close yet respectful encounters with these gentle giants and is the defining experience of the itinerary.

Diving highlights across the route
Outside Hanifaru Bay, the itinerary features a wide variety of dive sites across Baa and North Malé Atolls. Coral reefs showcase healthy hard and soft coral formations, while channel dives bring opportunities to witness stronger currents and larger marine life activity.

Encounters may include reef sharks, eagle rays, turtles, napoleon wrasse, and large schools of fusiliers and snappers. The diversity of sites ensures a balanced mix of relaxed reef exploration and more dynamic pelagic diving.

Marine encounters and highlights
The Love Manta Week is centred around seasonal manta activity, but also delivers a wide spectrum of marine life typical of the Maldives. Depending on conditions, guests may also encounter whale sharks, particularly in the broader Ari Atoll region, as well as dolphins and other pelagic species during crossings.

Island visits and local experiences
In addition to diving and snorkelling, the itinerary includes opportunities to visit local islands. These stops provide insight into Maldivian culture, offering a contrast to the underwater experience with glimpses of traditional island life, local communities, and coastal landscapes.

Seasonal focus
This itinerary operates during the peak manta season, typically between July and October, when plankton blooms attract large numbers of manta rays to Hanifaru Bay. This timing ensures the highest likelihood of witnessing manta aggregations and related feeding behaviour.

Highlights
•Dedicated manta ray-focused itinerary
•Snorkelling in Hanifaru Bay UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
•Diving across North Malé and Baa Atolls
•Channel dives with sharks, rays, and pelagic species
•Healthy coral reefs and diverse marine ecosystems
•Optional visits to local Maldivian islands
•Peak-season marine encounters (July–October)

The Love Whale Sharks Week explores the central atolls of the Maldives, focusing on unforgettable encounters with whale sharks in their natural feeding grounds. Timed with seasonal plankton-rich waters, this itinerary offers regular sightings of whale sharks alongside manta rays, reef sharks, turtles and vibrant reef ecosystems. With a mix of channel dives, outer reef explorations and relaxed drifts, it delivers one of the best opportunities to experience these gentle giants up close in crystal-clear tropical waters.

The voyage takes place across the central Maldivian atolls, beginning and ending in Malé, with no domestic flights required. This itinerary is designed around encounters with whale sharks, complemented by manta rays, reef sharks, and the rich biodiversity of the Indian Ocean. Guests explore a combination of channel dives, cleaning stations, outer reef walls, and night encounters that highlight the Maldives as one of the world’s premier megafauna diving destinations.

Throughout the week, the focus remains on South Ari Atoll, one of the most reliable whale shark habitats in the world, where encounters often occur during snorkelling and diving excursions. The surrounding waters also host manta cleaning stations and diverse pelagic life, offering frequent opportunities for close yet respectful wildlife interactions.

The route continues through Vaavu Atoll, where night diving becomes a signature experience, particularly at sites such as Alimatha Jetty, known for nurse sharks and stingrays gathering in large numbers after sunset. These conditions create an immersive nocturnal marine environment that contrasts with daytime pelagic encounters.

In North Ari Atoll and surrounding channel systems, the diving shifts toward dramatic drift dives along reef walls and pinnacles. Strong currents attract large schools of fish, reef sharks, trevallies, barracuda, and occasional sightings of hammerhead sharks in deeper blue-water sections. These dives emphasise motion, visibility, and high-energy pelagic encounters.

Between dives, onboard programmes include marine biology talks, whale shark conservation sessions, and educational presentations delivered in collaboration with research organisations. Guests gain insight into identification techniques, behaviour patterns, and ongoing conservation efforts focused on protecting whale sharks and reef ecosystems.

The experience is complemented by surface intervals on sandbanks, snorkelling sessions in shallow lagoons, and relaxed time onboard the vessel, where ocean-facing views remain constant. As the route loops back toward Malé, the focus gradually shifts from whale shark encounters to reef exploration and final drift dives before disembarkation.

The Solo Travelers Cruise is designed for independent adventurers seeking both social connection and world-class diving in the Maldives. Sailing through the central atolls, this itinerary blends relaxed island-hopping with vibrant reef dives, where manta rays, whale sharks, reef sharks and turtles are commonly encountered. Created to foster a friendly onboard atmosphere, it combines daily diving, spa experiences and shared social activities, making it ideal for solo guests who want to explore the ocean while meeting like-minded travellers in a comfortable, luxury liveaboard setting.

The cruise explores the Central Atolls of the Maldives, a region known for its balance of dramatic channel dives, coral gardens, pinnacles, and abundant marine life. This route is designed for both certified divers and active travellers seeking a mix of underwater exploration and leisure.

Daily diving typically includes up to three dives per day, depending on conditions and crossings. Guests explore diverse environments such as coral reefs, thilas (underwater pinnacles), and channels where currents attract large pelagic species.

Encounters commonly include manta rays, whale sharks, reef sharks, eagle rays, turtles, and vast schools of reef fish, alongside macro life such as nudibranchs and reef eels. Night dives are also featured, offering a chance to witness the reefs transform after dark.

Signature Marine Encounters (Love Mantas Focus Experience)
A key highlight of this route is the opportunity to encounter manta rays in cleaning stations and feeding areas, particularly in seasonal aggregation zones influenced by plankton-rich currents. Divers and snorkellers may observe mantas gliding effortlessly overhead or circling reef cleaning stations in mesmerising formations.

Depending on conditions, whale shark encounters are also possible, alongside frequent sightings of reef sharks and other pelagic species moving through the atoll channels.
Above-Water Experiences & Social Atmosphere
Beyond diving, the cruise offers a strong social and wellness element. Guests participate in sunset gatherings, beach BBQs on remote sandbanks, yoga sessions, and spa treatments aboard the yacht’s Asian-style spa, the largest of its kind in the Maldives.

Sandbank visits and uninhabited island stops provide opportunities for swimming, paddleboarding, and relaxing in secluded tropical surroundings. Evenings are often shared over themed dinners and open-air relaxation on deck under the stars.

The Solo Travelers Cruise is designed to foster connection, making it easy for guests to meet like-minded divers while still enjoying personal space and flexibility throughout the week.

Banana Reef

Male Atoll, Maldives

Banana Reef, named after the C-shape of the reef is around 100 meters in length. The reef is in front of the channel where fresh current enriches the reef with plankton it carries attracting also pelagic. The most exciting part of the reef is at the north-eastern side of the reef where big spectacular rocks starting from a depth of 30 meters rising up to 12 meters below the surface. Schools of Banner fish can be seen just at the start of the dive, the dog-toothed tuna and several species of Jackfish can be seen chasing their next pray. As you drift, the reef slopes down and after few minutes you will drift in the biggest overhang in Banana Reef where the top starts at 10m and drops to 20m. This overhang is fully covered with soft coral on its ceiling, huge schools of Blue line snappers is always inside letting you approach them very closely. It is both suitable for beginners and the most experienced divers and is a photographers’ heaven.

This atoll features deep channels, known as kandus, which funnel nutrient-rich water from the open ocean into the inner lagoon, attracting large schools of fish, sharks, and other pelagic species. Hanifaru Bay

Northern Region, Maldives

The famous Hanifaru Bay, which is known locally as Vandhumaafaru Adi, is thought to be one the few places in the world where whale sharks congregate in to mate, although recent research suggests otherwise with the vast majority of the whale sharks seen there being young males. The bay also regularly sees some of the largest gatherings of Manta rays worldwide with up to one hundred individuals in the small inlet when the tide pushes plankton into the bay.

Kadooma Thila

A magnificent long thin pinnacle in the middle of a channel between Cocoa Corner and Kandooma Island Resort, this is one of the few channels in the Maldives where it doesn't matter which way the current is going - it will be a spectacular dive! Grey reef sharks and eagle rays are likely companions here. Magnificent overhangs with draping colourful soft coral and shark cleaning stations await those who dive this challenging but rewarding dive site.

Fuvahmulah Atoll

Male Atoll, Maldives

Fuvahmulah (also known as Fua Mulaku and Poue Molluque) is the second-largest one-island atoll in the southern part of the Maldives. Visitors can get to the island by air or by sea, using the local liveaboard’s itinerary. Pristine diverse nature is represented here by tropical woodlands and wetlands, with rare birds and dense vegetation, freshwater lakes, marshland areas with thick vegetation, white-sand and pebble beaches, the biggest on the Maldives fertile lands of humus, mango, pineapple and orange trees. There are also several shrines, such as the Muslim mosque Gemmiskiy and the Buddhism stupa ruin called the Havitta. The place is also famous for a natural phenomenon known as Bissaaveli, where part of the beach sand moves away from the shore towards the edge of the reef, creating a lagoon, enclosed by sand and the shore of the island. Fuvahmulah became open to foreigners not long ago. That means it offers opportunities to dive at the barely touched reefs and stay in quite new hotels (developed starting in 2013). The most popular dive sites include Raazwa Faru (Fuvahmulah South), Thoondu (Fuvahmulah North), Rasgefannu, and the best spot for both diving and snorkeling, Neregando Fannu.

Divers can dive at Fuvahmulah throughout the year, with an average water temperature of about 26-29C/79-84F. During the hot and dry period from December to May, the water temperature falls to 24C/75F in some places. Short, heavy rains may occur from June to July.

Thresher sharks, tiger sharks, manta rays, eagle rays, turtles, dolphins, and many other smaller fish can be seen here.

Huvadhoo Atoll

Southern Region, Maldives

The Huvadhoo Atoll is located in the far south of the Maldives just above the equator. It’s the region’s second largest atoll and is divided into two separate administrative regions – the northern Gaafu Alifu and the southern Gaafu Dhaalu.

Huvadhoo provides an escape from the developed north, and its diving is less chartered. You’ll need to use local knowledge to explore the atoll’s 1,864 square miles (3000 km²) of ocean. Due to its distance from the country’s capital, the locals speak a different form of the Dhivehi language called Huvadu Bas. After a day spent diving, you can admire the red-hued sunset from the beach.

South Ari

South Male Atoll, Maldives

South Ari Atoll, Maldives is separated from North Ari Atoll for administrative purposes, and features shallower and relatively easier dive sites compared to the sites in North Ari Atoll, where the conditions are a bit harder. Some of the great dive spots in South Ari Atoll include Broken Rock (an interesting rock formation with a canyon, covered in delicate soft corals, sponges, and big gorgonian fans), Kudarah Thila (a small underwater pinnacle with large numbers of snapper, sweetlips, batfish, and grouper in the surrounding waters, which are actually a marine protected area), Panettone (a gently sloping reef, which is a great place to see magnificent manta rays), and Thundufushi Thila (a large pinnacle around 1km/0.6mi in diameter with a steep wall and some small caves in its shallower parts, where it is possible to spot reef sharks, eagle rays, tuna, and manta rays).
