The hotel property has just 3 floors and 85 standard rooms, suites and apartments. The Hotel Colombo provides a very comfortable base for your stay on Santa Maria Island and thought has been given to the public areas and the location of the rooms to optimise peace and quiet for all guests.

The Haliotis Dive Centre is just a short drive from the hotel at the local marina. With daily pick up provided, getting to one of the 55 dive spots with caves, canyons, walls and reefs could not be easier. The highlight of the dives in this part of the Azores is the manta rays encounters as they are commonly seen from the surface to 50 metres.

When you are not exploring the waters around the island, you can enjoy a gym session, a massage, a Turkish bath or a dip in the jacuzzi with a refreshing drink.

Haliotis Dive Centre

The exceptional conditions of the Azores location, climate and currents provide unique conditions for diving with diverse species of underwater flora and fauna. Haliotis is the biggest dive centre on the island of Santa Maria with a passionate dive team on-site. Here you can find a range of courses and diving trips available including day trips to some of the most famous reserves close by such as “Formigas” and “Dollabarat” banks.

There are around 55 dive spots with caves, canyons, walls and reefs around Santa Maria Island with the possibility of diving with big species of fish including the majestic manta rays. All dives are operated from RIBs to dive sites that are close by or up to a range of 24 nautical miles for the more challenging off shore banks.

The dive centre is equipped with a full range of Aqua Lang dive equipment available for rental, a souvenir shop and a compressor room with air and nitrox fills.

PADI Open Water Diver

This is the most popular dive program in the world! And can be your chance to have a lifetime of intense adventures.

The PADI Open Water Diver course consists of three main phases:

Knowledge Development ( online, independent study or in a classroom) to understand basic principles of scuba diving
Confined Water Dives to learn basic scuba skills
Open Water Dives to use your skills and explore!

PADI Advanced Open Water Diver

The Advanced Open Water Diver program gives you the opportunity to take your diving skill to the next level through three new areas of diving.
You complete your Deep Dive, Underwater Navigation Dive, Night Dive and two other dives for a total of five to attain your Advanced Open Water Diver certification.

This certification includes five dives, including the Deep Diver, the Underwater Navigation Diver and three of the following: You’ll plan your learning path with your instructor by choosing from a long list of Adventure Dives. There are two required dives – Deep and Underwater Navigation – and you choose the other three, for a total of five dives. During the Deep Adventure Dive, you learn how to plan dives to deal with the physiological effects and challenges of deeper scuba diving. The Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive refines your compass navigation skills and helps you better navigate using kick-cycles, visual landmarks and time.

The other knowledge and skills you get vary with your interest and the adventures you have – photography, buoyancy control, fish identification, exploring wrecks and many more.

Medic First Aid (EFR)

First Aid course - To be completed with Rescue Diver Course unless you already hold a first certificate (please bring this to the dive centre if you wish to complete the course).

This course is to teach you how to administer First Aid to a person. Various skills will be learnt such as CPR, types of injury and bandaging.

PADI Scuba Diver

This course is a subset of the PADI Open Water Dive Course. If you’re short on time but really want to become a diver, The PADI Scuba Diver rating might be right for you.

The PADI Scuba Diver course consists of three main phases:

PADI Scuba Diver to Open Water Upgrade

This program will allow you to dive to depths of 18 metres and achieve the most popular dive program in the world!

From the beginning to end of the course, you will learn the fundamentals of scuba diving, including areas such as dive equipment and techniques that will give you the confidence and skill to become a responsible diver.

PADI Adventure Diver

After your Open Water course, why not start a PADI Adventure Diver course and complete some 'Adventure Dives'? You can also take part in just 1 or 2 Adventure Dives if you prefer and these will also count towards the Advanced certification.

To become a certified PADI Adventure Diver you will need to have achieved 3 Adventure Dives with a PADI certified Instructor. These can be completed in as little as 1 day.

PADI ReActivate Scuba Refresher Program

Update your dive skills and knowledge with a quick scuba refresher from the PADI Open Water Diver Course before jumping back into the water.

Using ReActivate Touch (for tablets or mobile devices) or ReActivate Online (for your personal computer), you’ll immerse yourself in dive scenarios and make decisions that test your understanding of important dive safety concepts, dive planning essentials and problem management. Move through ReActivate at your own pace and delve deeper into topics when you need or want to.
In the water, your PADI Professional will help you regain comfort and confidence in scuba diving. You’ll practice a few safety-related skills and then go over anything you specifically want to review.

PADI Discover Scuba Diving

This course is a subset of the PADI Open Water Diver course. If you're short on time but really want to become a diver, the PADI Scuba Diver rating might be right for you.

The PADI Scuba Diver course consists of three main phases:

Experience scuba diving under the direct supervision of a PADI Pro. Take your first breaths underwater in water shallower than 2 metres/6ft. For children who are at least 8 years old.

Your training starts by reviewing reasons for deep diving and how important it is to know your personal limits. During four deep dives with your instructor, you’ll go over:

PADI Dry Suit Diver

Becoming a dry suit diver allows you to expand your boundaries and dive more places, more often. This suit seals you off from the water and keeps you comfortable, even in surprisingly cold water.

The first thing you’ll discover is which dry suit style and accompanying undergarments are right for you and the diving you’ll do. Then you’ll learn how to take care of your dry suit. During two dives, in addition to a confined water dive, you’ll practice:

PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy

Observe aquatic life without disturbing their surroundings. Improve the buoyancy skills you learned as a new diver and elevate them to the next level.

During two scuba dives, you’ll learn how to:

PADI Underwater Navigator

Fine-tune your underwater observation skills and learn to use your compass more accurately. This course may count towards college credit, ask your instructor.

You’ll learn the tools of the trade, including navigation using natural clues and by following compass headings. During three scuba dives, you’ll practice:

PADI Digital Underwater Photographer

The most popular diving specialties course. It’s easy and fun to capture images of your underwater scuba adventures.

Through hands-on training during two scuba dives and guidance from your PADI Professional, you’ll discover:

PADI Equipment Specialist

Learn to manage basic scuba diving equipment repairs and adjustments. Understand routine care and maintenance procedures and how dive gear works.

You’ll learn about routine care and maintenance procedures as well as scuba equipment storage recommendations. Your instructor will show you how to overcome some common equipment problems and offer equipment configuration suggestions. You may even get to jump into the water to try new or unfamiliar equipment.

PADI Night Diver

The underwater world changes as day creatures retire & nocturnal organisms emerge. If you've wondered what happens underwater after the sun goes down, enrol in the PADI Night Diver Specialty course.

Scuba diving at night teaches you to focus on what you can see in your light’s beam, on controlling your buoyancy by feel, on staying with your buddy and on paying attention to details you may overlook during the day. During three night dives, you’ll practice:

PADI Diver Propulsion Vehicle

Propel your way through the water and glide over reefs, buzz around a large wreck or weave through a kelp forest. You must be at least 12 years old and a PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver or higher.

The PADI Diver Propulsion Vehicle course guides you in choosing the right DPV for you. You’ll make two dives and learn about:

PADI Search and Recovery Diver

Retrieve lost items that have fallen overboard or over a dock. Learn effective swimming patterns and using a lift bag for heavy objects.

Gathering information and resources, then carefully planning a search are the first important steps you learn. During four scuba dives you’ll practice:

PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider

Immediately recognize scuba diving illnesses treatable with emergency oxygen and be prepared to offer aid. There are no prerequisites or age restrictions. This course is open to everyone.

You’ll learn about dive injuries, different types of emergency oxygen equipment and safety considerations when using oxygen. Then you’ll practice:

PADI Enriched Air Diver

The most popular PADI specialty course. Scuba diving with enriched air nitrox gives you more no decompression time, especially on repetitive scuba dives.

You’ll learn why diving with air that has higher oxygen and lower nitrogen content gives you more bottom time, along with enriched air equipment considerations. During a practical session, and two optional (or required) scuba dives, you’ll:

Wreck dive

A trip to the local wreck dives is a must for the experienced diver. It is an amazing experience!

PADI Public Safety Diver

Work with local authorities, be part of a rescue team and, quite possibly, assist in underwater criminal investigations.

You’ll be introduced to the special procedures, equipment, scene handling, communications and documentation requirements for a public safety diving operation. During four open water dives you’ll practice compass navigation, knot tying, arc search techniques, victim recovery, rope-pull communications and rescue techniques for a distressed public safety diver, plus plenty more.

PADI AWARE Fish Identification

Enjoy dives even more when you can recognize and identify fish families and their characteristics.

Be a leader who mentors and motivates others. Gain dive knowledge, supervision abilities, and become a role model to divers around the world.

The PADI Dive master course teaches you to be a leader and take charge of dive activities. Through knowledge development sessions, water skills exercises and workshops, and hands-on practical assessment, you develop the skills to organize and direct a variety of scuba diving activities.
