Raja Ampat has been documented as one of the last frontiers of unspoilt diving. The archipelago’s pristine reefs are not only rich but the region also proves to have the greatest coral reef biodiversity for its size in the world. Raja Ampat holds: 600 islands and reefs, 1,320 fish species, 550 coral species and all that is yet to be discovered.

Raja Ampat is the seascape’s crown jewel. Fittingly, the name means “four kings.” The four main islands or “Kings” of the archipelago: Waigeo in the north, Salawati west of Sorong, Batanta north of Salawati, and Misool in the south.

Visit Waigeo and dive the famous Dampier Strait, some of Raja Ampat´s most action-packed dive sites. Exhilarating current dives and reliable manta cleaning stations where you can experience these majestic giant pelagics dance for hours along with many other treasures such as the tasselled wobbegong shark.

Dive the beautiful and unique mangrove areas of Yanggefo and Gam islands where the tips of healthy acropora corals contrast with the lush green of the mangroves making excellent split images, while just beneath the surface schools of archerfish hunt among the forest of mangrove roots. Batanta Island, known for its excellent muck diving and amazing variety of nudibranchs including the endemic Thecacera sp. Black sand slopes full of wonderful critters and frequent sightings of the rare mimic octopus. Misool area in southern Raja Ampat is a must for those who enjoy radiant coloured soft corals. There are stunning walls, pinnacles and reefs with masses of huge gorgonian fans and sea fans hosting an array of the famous pygmy seahorses. The vast area and variety of dive sites makes it the ideal location to be discovered via liveaboard.

It is almost impossible to put together a daily itinerary due to the magnificent diving everywhere Mermaid I goes. No trip is the same, with so many different sites to visit and explore. If there is somewhere in particular you really have your heart set on, please discuss with the Cruise Director who will do their utmost to get you there – conditions, ship and your safety allowing!

Dinner will be served at 19:00 hours as we cruise into the sunset on our overnight journey to Kawula Island, east of Flores.

Day 2

We will start the trip by spending the day at Lewaling Bay, in the north of Kawula Island. The scenery of the bay is amazing since there are 2 volcanos in each side of the bay. There we will do 4 dives. The diving at Lewaling Bay is very diverse, consisting of walls, slopes and muck dives. With a great combination of large and small critters, from schooling barracudas and lots of schooling fish to pygmy seahorses. We will finish the day with a muck dive as a night dive in front of the village of Watu Warawutun, which stands at the bottom of one of the volcanos. After dinner we will cruise overnight to the Alor Islands, which are about 7 to 8 hours away.

Day 3-5

The next 2 days we will spend diving around the Pantar Strait, which is the strait between the 2 major islands of Alor and Pantar Island. There are 4 islands in the Pantar Strait, Ternate in the north, Reta and Pura in the middle and Treweg in the south. Between these 4 islands plus the islands of Pantar and Alor, there are several dozen dive sites with an incredible variety of diving sceneries: walls with huge overhangs and hard coral gardens in the shallows, fringing reefs covered with pristine hard and soft corals and all kind of sponges surrounded by zillions of anthias and damsels, black sandy slopes covered with thousands of anemones, and muck dives where we can find rhinophias, fire sea urchins with coleman’s shrimps and zebra crabs, channels between the islands where you just drift with some strong currents and look out for pelagic fish passing by. The water temperature can vary greatly in this area. In the northern and middle area, the temperature is usually around 27 C. And in the south, it can vary from 21C to 25C. Nudi Falls

Lembeh Strait, Indonesia

This is a beautiful mini wall that gives way to a sand and rubble slope. This site is well known for it's variety of nudibranchs, comet fish and pygmy seahorses.

Barracuda Point

Manado, Indonesia

Yes- the name says it all - barracuda, and if they're there, a lot of them (sometimes 100+)! Not only barracuda but big tuna and jacks too. However they're not always around and this reef isn't the most spectacular. The wall/slope has not much to offer but dead coral and sand. It's definitely not a spot for beginners as there can be strong currents, both upwards and downward! That's why Barracuda's like it so much here! We think this site is worth the risk of one dive during your stay, on the hope of seeing a big school.

Cannibal Rock

Komodo & Lesser Sunda, Indonesia

The Cannibal Rock has marginal visibility, but more than makes up for it in terms of density of life. This small seamount rises to within a few feet of the surface, and it is easy to circumnavigate in a single dive. Sea apples and other varieties of the sea cucumber family are especially abundant here, as are nudibranchs, puffer fish, octopus, and all weird and wonderful manner of blennies.

Manta Alley

Bali, Indonesia

At Manta Alley the water clarity can sometimes be only about 40 feet, but the plankton that steps on visibility also consistently attracts manta rays to this site. Here divers can see manta rays cruising the shallows along the sloping face of the reef, and with a bit of luck and a careful approach they could get fairly close.

Crystal Rock

Komodo & Lesser Sunda, Indonesia

Crystal Rock is a large seamount that barely breaks the surface, but below is very rich in marine life, particularly lionfish, anthias, coral grouper, and butterfly fish. Some of the current underwater is swift, but nothing that divers cannot swim against and the rich wide-angle potential of the colourful filter feeders make it worthwhile.

Komodo & Lesser Sunda, Indonesia

The northeast tip of Gililawa Laut is forever a great site to dive if you are into fish but not corals. On the corner of the reef sits rests a very large rock, behind which a drop off covered with boulders many holes in between is found. Excellent grouper country and if divers are there at the right time, especially in October and November, will see many groupers aggregate to spawn; then there are many golden trevallies, snappers and sometimes huge napoleon wrasses. The best time to dive this site is in slight current before or after slack-tide.

Three Sisters

Komodo & Lesser Sunda, Indonesia

Three Sisters are three quite large flooded pinnacles within easy swimming distance of each other at about 10 meters apart. They are about five meters below the surface, making them a bit hard to find, and bottoms out at about maximum 30 meters onto rubble and sand. The rocks run to the East in line at about 100 meters from a small reef that sticks out on the Eastern side of an island. It is not too affected by current and can usually be dived. The walls of the pinnacles are covered in soft corals, Tubastrea, and Crinoids. The tops of the pinnacles offer stunning hard and soft coral gardens.

Three Sisters dive site in the Komodo Islands seems to be pure with an incredible coral cover and a great fish life.

The three sisters are 3 big rocks on a 30 m deep sandy bottom. The top part of the rocks is about 3 m deep, perfect to finish the dive in the shallow water.

On this dive site you can find many species of nudibranchs. In the blue, pellagic fishes swim around and whitetip sharks are often on the deeper part of the site.
