What the Course Entails

Teamwork is essential for ice diving, so you’ll start by learning the roles and responsibilities of support personnel, tenders and safety divers. You also discuss types of ice, site selection and preparation, the effects of cold, emergency procedures and handling equipment issues. During three closely supervised ice dives, you’ll practice:

Course Pre-requisites

You need to be a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver who is at least 18 years old to enroll in the Ice Diver course.

Course Flow

As for staying warm, a good dry suit is a must. Any type of dry suit material will work for ice diving - the undergarments are the key. Some manufacturers make thick, custom undergarments that work well for ice diving, but these are typically expensive. If you already have winter gear, you can use that, provided you can fit it under your dry suit. Puffy down coats and vests work great, as do wool layers. Wear several pairs of thick hiking socks at once - you won’t regret it.
