Additional Information

The aim of our travels when inspecting the resorts is to carefully analyze if this is possible and if so, deliver the best options possible. When MJ travelled to the Azores, she did just that and stayed on 2 islands, Sao Miguel and Faial Island. At the end of the trip she was able to fit in a cheeky night in Lisbon and explore some of the lively attractions the city has to offer.

Sao Miguel Island, also known as the “Green Island” and the biggest of the Azores archipelago has a huge variety of places to visit above and below water. Being the land of crater lakes, Sao Miguel has places like “Sete Cidades Lake” steeped in myth and legend on the west side of the island and the “Furnas Lake” with beautiful hot springs and natural hot water pools on the east side of the island among many other places of interest. Underwater, there is an adventure waiting for new and experienced divers with a good number of dive sites easily accessed from shore including marine reserves, rocky reefs, underwater caves, arches, wrecks and seamounts with crystal clear and an abundance of rich marine life including pelagic fish, devil rays and sharks.

Faial is famous for the underwater volcanic craters surrounded by hundreds of fish, whale watching tours and off course home to one of the ocean’s fastest fish, the blue shark. Faial has wonderful coastal dives where you will be taken on an adventure to see yellow flowers like anemones with colourful blennies, puffer fish, jacks, sun fish, mackerels, sharks and manta rays. The channel between Faial and Pico Island has a few seamounts and very distinct dives. This is also where in addition to “Condor Seamount” located about 20 miles south of Faial Island; the adrenaline-fuelled shark dive takes place. Manta rays and other pelagic fish are also a common sight on “Princess Alice Bank” , located 45 miles southwest of Faial.

Itinerary Overview

Your adventure starts at London Gatwick.

Your flight will depart from Gatwick in the evening around 20:30 and arrive Sao Miguel Island at 23:30. On arrival you will be met by a member of our ground team and transferred to the Caloura Hotel, your home for the next 6 nights.

The stunning Caloura Hotel is located on a beautiful area on the south of the São Miguel Island. The perfect place for a peaceful and relaxing getaway whilst giving you easy access to great dive spots.

The perfect place for a peaceful and relaxing holiday in the Azores Archipelago. The hotel has direct access to the sea and to its unique, natural and volcanic rock swimming pools. The trails that take you to the swimming pools are all decorated by the region's characteristic basalt stone walls, once used to protect the vineyards and now used to protect the local vegetation and the hotel’s surroundings.

This is where the fun begins with 2 dives a day for 4 days!

The marine life in the area is abundant with the subtropical waters around the resort attracting groupers, moray eels, stingrays, dolphins, barracuda and turtles. The topography is absolutely spectacular with a selection of wrecks, plenty of arches, caves, volcanic cliffs and rocky reefs.

The Caloura PADI Dive Centre offers daily boat dives from RIBs to a variety of local sites with sea temperatures ranging between 17 and 24 degrees Celsius.

Explore the Island uphill.

On your dry day dont miss out on the opportunity to explore the rest of the island. Sao Miguel is home to beautiful lakes, hot springs and much more.

“Sete Cidades Lake” steeped in myth and legend on the west side of the island and the “Furnas Lake” with beautiful hot springs and natural hot water pools on the east side of the island among many other places of interest.
