Here, divers can encounter resident turtles, patrolling grey reef sharks, large schools of fusiliers pursued by trevally, and vibrant blue-line snappers crowding the overhangs. Night dives bring a different kind of excitement, with the possibility of close encounters with nurse sharks.

This is truly the Best of the Maldives — delivering unforgettable underwater experiences at every turn.

15 Days 14 Nights

From December to March is the ideal time to join this itinerary, as the prevailing currents in the channels—or kandus—primarily flow from the east. During this period, there are fewer boats in the area, and the route covers remote atolls with minimal resort development and numerous uninhabited islands.

Over the course of this 14-night journey, guests have the chance to explore some of the Maldives’ top dive sites for shark encounters, including sightings of hammerheads, tiger sharks, and whale sharks. Manta rays, eagle rays, and other large pelagic species are also commonly seen.

The outer walls and corners of the channels in Vaavu and Meemu Atolls offer an added bonus: striking overhangs adorned in vibrant hues of blue, yellow, and pink soft corals. In Thaa Atoll, hammerheads are a highlight, and whale sharks often approach the boat at night, drawn in by krill attracted to the vessel’s lights.

When the currents are running just right, the channel dives become truly exceptional. These sites teem with schooling snappers, trevally, barracuda, whitetip and grey reef sharks, groupers, Napoleon wrasse, turtles, eagle rays, and more.

Fuvahmulah Atoll: Tiger sharks, oceanic manta and thresher sharks. Oceanic Island with incredible visibility.
Huvadhoo Atoll: Whale sharks at night, silver tips, grey reef sharks and many, many more.
Addu Atoll: WWII wreck HMS British Loyalty, majestic manta cleaning stations and tiger sharks.

Thaa Atoll: Grey reef & white tip reef sharks plus the chance of Whale sharks at night
Meemu Atoll: Enchanting channels with pelagic action, sharks, Eagle rays and beautiful soft coral. Manta cleaning station
Vaavu Atoll: A sunset/night dive at Alimatha, Vaavu atoll is a must to have a memorable experience with the resident nurse shark

Less crowded dive sites with plenty of action.
Foammulah; Tiger sharks, oceanic manta and thresher sharks. Oceanic Island with incredible visibility.
Huvadhoo; Whale sharks at night, tiger sharks, silver tips, grey reef sharks and many, many more.
Addu Atoll; WWII wreck HMS British Loyalty, majestic manta cleaning stations

The period from December to March is considered the best time to explore the southerly atolls of the Maldives, offering exceptional shark diving at remote sites between Huvadhu and Addu (Seenu) Atolls. This week-long itinerary takes guests far from the crowds to dive the pristine waters of Addu, Fuvahmulah, and Huvadhu, all while searching for some of the Indian Ocean’s most iconic large marine species, including tiger sharks, silvertips, grey reef sharks, whale sharks, and more.

At Huvadhu Atoll—home to one of the Maldives’ deepest lagoons—the combination of strong currents and multiple channels creates ideal conditions for shark encounters. Whale sharks, silky sharks, hammerheads, and grey reef sharks are frequently sighted in this region.

Guests will have the opportunity to dive several world-class kandus, including Vilingilli, Koodoo, Nilandhoo, and Mareehaa, all known for their rich biodiversity and pelagic action. In Fuvahmulah, the south plateaux are renowned for regular sightings of tiger sharks, silky sharks, silvertips, and the elusive thresher shark.

Addu Atoll offers a mix of history and marine beauty with dives at the World War II wreck of HMS British Loyalty and the majestic manta cleaning station at Maa Kandu. A relaxing drift dive at Demon Corner provides a perfect way to begin or end this thrilling itinerary.

Guests drift across dramatic channels, snorkel over sunlit pinnacles, and experience the thrill of a night snorkel as nurse sharks emerge from the darkness. Each day brings something new. Snorkelers may come face-to-face with gliding eagle rays, curious turtles, sleek reef sharks, and dense clouds of reef fish. Manta rays soar gracefully through the water, while moray eels peer out from rocky crevices. On occasion, the lucky few may even spot a whale shark cruising through the blue. Maaya thila

Ari Atoll , Maldives

A Protected Marine Area, this offers one of the best-known dives in the Maldives. There is a remarkable variety of marine life on the thila, including grey reef sharks, white tip sharks, turtles, stonefish, frogfish, zebra morays, batfish and many, many more species. At the edge of the thila, where there is a large coral overhang full of bright orange Tubastrea corals. The top of the rock, at 15m (50ft), is covered in colourful soft corals. The vertical side of the rock drops down to the atoll plate at 40m (130ft). In this channel between the satellite rock and the thila, grey reef sharks often patrol and we have seen guitar shark here on a number of occasions.

Large and shallow plateaus (10 - 20 ft) on the west side of the atoll, right next to the wide lagoon of Rasfari. It is covered with hard corals and hosts a cleaning station during the northeast monsoon. The most common way to do the dive here is to start on top of the reef, which is protected from the currents and after spending some time with the mantas continue the dive towards the wall that drops down to about 75 feet. The wall is nicely covered with hard corals, rich with fish life and popular with turtles.

South Male

South Male Atoll, Maldives

The South Malé Atoll offers thrilling dives characterized by strong currents, making it ideal for more experienced divers. This atoll features deep channels, known as kandus, which funnel nutrient-rich water from the open ocean into the inner lagoon, attracting large schools of fish, sharks, and other pelagic species. Coral life flourishes along the outer reef walls and on thilas—underwater pinnacles—while overhangs and caves within the channels provide shelter for a variety of macro life.

Thaa Atoll

Ari Atoll , Maldives

Thaa Atoll (also known as Kolhumadulu) is among the least visited dive destinations in the Maldives. This round atoll has a combined landmass close to nine kilometres, with no single island larger than a square kilometre. The mesmerizingly beautiful series of 66 tiny islands that make up the atoll are surrounded by spectacularly clear water with underwater wonders and beauty yet to be discovered. Some dives have strong currents but this brings in the pelagic such as Hammerheads, Whale Sharks and dolphins especially at night. Expect large reefs, coral gardens, steep walls and overhangs plus action packed channels.

Gaafaru Atoll

Male Atoll, Maldives

Gaafaru Atoll is a small island on the important shipping route, which is surrounded by numerous shipwrecks. The main dive sites around here are the SS Seagull (a giant sunken steamship with an anchor at 6m/20ft, boilers and stern at 30m/98ft), Lady Christine (a sunken iron vessel with a drop down at 50m/164ft, overhangs and caves) and Erlangen (almost intact shipwreck with the hull at 50m/164ft).

The best season for diving at Gaafaru Atoll (Maldives) is from January to May, while June is usually not recommended. The water temperature averages 27-28C/81-82F, and the air is generally 29-31C/84-88F.

The shipwrecks of the Gaafaru Atoll dive sites serve as home to nurse sharks, Napoleon wrasses, moray eels, rays, grouper, and lots of crustaceans. Sometimes divers may even spot a hawksbill turtle.

Fuvahmulah Atoll

Male Atoll, Maldives

Fuvahmulah (also known as Fua Mulaku and Poue Molluque) is the second-largest one-island atoll in the southern part of the Maldives. Visitors can get to the island by air or by sea, using the local liveaboard’s itinerary. Pristine diverse nature is represented here by tropical woodlands and wetlands, with rare birds and dense vegetation, freshwater lakes, marshland areas with thick vegetation, white-sand and pebble beaches, the biggest on the Maldives fertile lands of humus, mango, pineapple and orange trees. There are also several shrines, such as the Muslim mosque Gemmiskiy and the Buddhism stupa ruin called the Havitta. The place is also famous for a natural phenomenon known as Bissaaveli, where part of the beach sand moves away from the shore towards the edge of the reef, creating a lagoon, enclosed by sand and the shore of the island. Fuvahmulah became open to foreigners not long ago. That means it offers opportunities to dive at the barely touched reefs and stay in quite new hotels (developed starting in 2013). The most popular dive sites include Raazwa Faru (Fuvahmulah South), Thoondu (Fuvahmulah North), Rasgefannu, and the best spot for both diving and snorkeling, Neregando Fannu.

Divers can dive at Fuvahmulah throughout the year, with an average water temperature of about 26-29C/79-84F. During the hot and dry period from December to May, the water temperature falls to 24C/75F in some places. Short, heavy rains may occur from June to July.

Thresher sharks, tiger sharks, manta rays, eagle rays, turtles, dolphins, and many other smaller fish can be seen here.

Huvadhoo Atoll

Southern Region, Maldives

The Huvadhoo Atoll is located in the far south of the Maldives just above the equator. It’s the region’s second largest atoll and is divided into two separate administrative regions – the northern Gaafu Alifu and the southern Gaafu Dhaalu.

Huvadhoo provides an escape from the developed north, and its diving is less chartered. You’ll need to use local knowledge to explore the atoll’s 1,864 square miles (3000 km²) of ocean. Due to its distance from the country’s capital, the locals speak a different form of the Dhivehi language called Huvadu Bas. After a day spent diving, you can admire the red-hued sunset from the beach.
