Thorfinn

Explore the world's best wreck diving at Truk Lagoon onboard SS Thorfinn

Dive into the heart of Chuuk Lagoon with the SS Thorfinn, a gateway to underwater World War II history. Explore vibrant corals, abundant marine life, and historic shipwrecks and aircraft. This 58-meter liveaboard offers comfort, expert guidance, and unforgettable diving adventures suitable for divers of all skill levels.

The Thorfinn offers one of the best ways to explore Truk Lagoon, widely regarded as the site of the world’s finest wreck diving. Operating in these historic waters since 1980, Thorfinn combines extensive experience with exceptional service, delivering great value without pretense. Guests enjoy spacious accommodations, refined yet relaxed interiors, delicious food, and extensive onboard comforts.

Centrally moored within the lagoon, Thorfinn provides convenient access to the most iconic wreck sites. Divers can enjoy continuous seven-day (or longer) diving schedules from fast, state-of-the-art tenders. Up to five different dive sites are visited daily (weather permitting), offering the rare opportunity to explore over 30 distinct wrecks in a single week. All dives are conducted in small groups to ensure a personalised experience and avoid crowding.

For rebreather divers, a separate service table is available for easy access and storage of specialised equipment, away from standard gear-filling and departure areas.

A professional team of up to 20 friendly, island-based crew members provides exceptional service on a 1:1 crew-to-guest ratio. Dedicated dive crews, full-time hostesses, deckhands, engineers, and two skilled chefs ensure every guest’s needs are met. International dishes are served daily, and special dietary needs are accommodated when possible based on available supplies.

Dives are conducted from powerful, well-designed, covered 32-foot tenders. These are equipped with radios, sonar, under-seat gear storage, fresh water showers, and seat-edge lighting. Each tender visits a separate dive site to ensure an uncrowded, immersive experience. Expert local guides, many of whom have worked with Thorfinn for over 18 years, lead every dive.

Truk Lagoon offers calm waters, minimal currents, and warm, bath-like temperatures (29°C/84°F), making it a comfortable year-round dive destination. There are no distinct seasons, though northeast trade winds between December and April offer a cooling breeze and light sea chop. Rain showers are typically brief and followed by sunshine. The lagoon’s easy diving conditions are suitable for anyone with basic scuba certification, and Thorfinn has maintained an excellent safety record for over 30 years.

Beyond the famed wrecks—sunken ships, planes, and even a submarine—divers may also venture to outer barrier reefs known for vibrant coral, sharks, eagle rays, schools of barracuda, jackfish, batfish, and a variety of reef species.
