Fukui

Manado, Indonesia

Named after a Japanese diver who dived this spot 20 years ago. He was the first person to publish a description of the place and henceforth its name; Fukui. It is comparable with the rest of Bunaken's dive sites, however it is one of the few spots without a significant wall. Fukui is more sloping and has a few short, steep drops. Fukui is a "cleaning station" and all kinds of big fish have themselves cleaned while they take a good rest. It's a perfect place to observe Napoleon wrasse, barracuda, Jack and big Snapper. A sandy area at Fukui is home to a colony of garden eels. At a depth of 17 metres there are 5 good-sized "Tridacna" giant clams lying in a row.

However, the coral at Fukui has suffered significant damage from bomb-fishing in the past (before the creation of Bunaken National Park in 1991), so in July 2004 Eco Divers was part of a reef-regeneration effort, helping to install a large number of “Eco Reefs” artificial reef modules at Fukui. Coral is continually be transplanted onto the modules and it is hoped that the new coral growth will eventually become a thriving fish habitat as it always used to be.

Fukui normally has a very mild current that can, occasionally, be a bit stronger. Average visibility is 20-25 meters.

Barracuda Point

Manado, Indonesia

Yes- the name says it all - barracuda, and if they're there, a lot of them (sometimes 100+)! Not only barracuda but big tuna and jacks too. However they're not always around and this reef isn't the most spectacular. The wall/slope has not much to offer but dead coral and sand. It's definitely not a spot for beginners as there can be strong currents, both upwards and downward! That's why Barracuda's like it so much here! We think this site is worth the risk of one dive during your stay, on the hope of seeing a big school.

Fish Soup

Komodo & Lesser Sunda, Indonesia

The underwater landscape is very impressive with huge Gorgonian sea fans, a dramatic precipice where sharks, jacks and rays congregate and a beautiful coral garden to finish the dive!

Between the mainland and Pangabatan there is a channel which is about 2 km wide. The current flowing through can be quite fierce, so this dive site is only for experienced divers.

There is a good chance to see eagle rays, marble rays, mackerels and tunas and on the sand between the corals often lie white tip sharks or cowtail rays.

A good place for large fish and sharks but you can also find some interesting small animals for example a rare whiskered pipefish, nudibranchs and several leaffish, crocodile fish, mantis shrimps and cuttlefish.

The dive is mainly along a reef wall and it has some very interesting features. At the top of the reef, there is a 20-metre long cave that can be explored.

There are many whop corals, anemones, sponges, and Gorgonian fans along the wall making for a beautiful sight. The reef wall slopes down to around 25 metres and then it drops off to around 50 metres.

You can see many of the common reef fish of the area including batfish, anthias, damselfish, groupers, cardinal fish, sweetlips, angelfish, parrotfish, triggerfish, surgeonfish, and butterflyfish.

There is often a good amount of pelagic fish to view and the area is known as a popular area for eagle rays, manta rays, sharks, and turtles. Jacks, barracuda, snappers, and large schools of fusiliers, are commonly seen on this healthy reef.

Above water there is a steep rock wall descending into the sea, so underwater there are huge jumbled rocks and boulders and a steep wall covered with lots of hard and soft corals and sponges.
